Identify the customer or authorized business owner, provider account, router or mesh account, and anyone else who manages the network. Do not claim, transfer, remove, or reset equipment that may belong to an ISP, landlord, employer, prior owner, MSP, HOA, or building operator.
2. Draw the current path
Identify the modem or fiber handoff, ISP gateway, router, mesh nodes, extenders, switches, access points, and important wired devices. Photograph labels only into the authorized private job record; never publish serial numbers, MAC addresses, QR codes, Wi‑Fi keys, or the customer’s wiring map.
3. Inventory what must still work
List device categories and workflows, not personal content: phones, computers, printers and scanning, cameras and recording, Sonos, TVs, doorbells, locks, thermostats, NAS, VPN, POS, phones, access control, guest access, and approved remote administration.
4. Preserve a recoverable baseline
Use the router maker’s supported backup or configuration record when available. Note the exact case-sensitive network name privately, router role, security mode, guest or IoT networks, and approved reservations or special settings. Never copy passwords into a report or AI chat.
5. Define the cutover and rollback
Choose an outage window, priority tests, a time limit, and the condition that means stop and restore the old setup. Keep the old router intact, labeled, and available; do not factory-reset, trade in, or discard it until the owner accepts the migration.
6. Check the exact replacement path
Follow current instructions for the provider handoff and router model. If an ISP gateway and a separate router are both involved, do not enable bridge or passthrough mode, change WAN settings, or disable security by guesswork.

Prepare without disturbing the working network
Review the new router’s official setup, supported security, update path, ports, power, and provider requirements. Decide continuity or clean start before the outage begins.

Record the last-known-good state
Confirm one wired or nearby device, internet access, printing, camera recording, Sonos, work access, and other priority workflows before the swap. A before-state prevents old problems from being blamed on the new router.

Power down—do not erase—the old router
Disconnect only the identified ordinary power and network cables needed for the approved swap. Leave reset buttons, fiber, provider enclosures, electrical wiring, and unknown building connections alone.

Bring up the provider and router path first
Prove the documented modem, ONT, or gateway handoff and the new router’s internet/WAN state before troubleshooting individual Wi‑Fi devices. A visible Wi‑Fi name does not prove internet service.

Test one trusted phone or computer near the primary router, then one approved wired device if the design uses one. Correct the shared network path before putting dozens of devices through setup mode.

Validate, document, then retire old equipment
Test normal workflows, note exceptions, and let the owner accept the result. Factory reset or return old equipment only as a separate approved step after recovery, retention, provider-return, and data-disposal requirements are confirmed.
Device-by-device acceptance
Reconnected is not the same as fully working.
Check the normal customer workflow for each priority category. Green lights, Wi‑Fi bars, and an app tile are clues, not complete proof.
Phones and computers
They may retain the saved network but still need to rejoin after a security change. VPN, work policy, DNS, or one-device trouble is separate from basic Wi‑Fi.
Acceptance test
Confirm the intended Wi‑Fi, ordinary internet access, and the owner’s normal approved work path without opening private files, messages, browsing history, or password managers.
Printers and scanners
A printer may join the network while computers still point to its old local address, duplicate queue, or a different guest network. Printing and scanning are separate paths.
Acceptance test
Use a blank or Tech Genie test page, then a non-private scan destination approved by the owner. Do not test with customer documents or save scan-to-email credentials.
Cameras and video doorbells
Live view, recording, notifications, remote viewing, and account ownership can fail independently. A Wi‑Fi reconnect does not prove recordings continued during the outage.
Acceptance test
Have the authorized owner verify live view, a disposable test event, recording, time, and notifications. Keep views, recordings, addresses, setup codes, and device IDs out of public notes and AI chats.
Sonos, TVs, and streaming devices
Discovery, saved Wi‑Fi, controller permissions, app service, and playback are different layers. Some systems require an app-led network update even when the name matches.
Acceptance test
Confirm the authorized controller sees the intended rooms or device, then test ordinary playback. Do not create a new household, transfer ownership, or factory-reset products as a shortcut.
Locks, thermostats, plugs, and smart-home gear
Older devices may support only particular bands or security. Unsupported gear must not force the entire network onto obsolete protection.
Acceptance test
With the owner present, verify the vendor app and the device’s normal physical function. Preserve manual access and safety controls; do not lock anyone out or change automations by guesswork.
NAS, VPN, POS, phones, and business systems
These can depend on reservations, static addresses, DNS, port rules, certificates, vendor allowlists, VLANs, or managed settings that an SSID and password do not carry over.
Acceptance test
Use an approved outage window and responsible vendor. Validate one real but non-sensitive workflow per system, record evidence privately, and roll back if the site’s agreed critical path fails.
Before calling it complete
Validate the property, not just the setup app.
The provider path and new router report a stable internet connection, and at least two trusted client devices agree.
The intended Wi‑Fi name, security mode, and guest or smart-device boundaries match the approved design; obsolete security was not enabled for compatibility.
Printing and scanning were tested separately with non-private material, and duplicate or stale queues were documented rather than deleted blindly.
Camera live view, recording, time, remote access, and notifications were checked separately by the authorized owner.
Sonos, TVs, speakers, doorbells, locks, thermostats, and priority smart devices completed their normal owner-approved workflow.

Do not downgrade to WEP, WPA, TKIP, open Wi‑Fi, disabled security, or an exposed guest network to keep legacy equipment online. Use the maker’s supported path, isolate or replace the device, or escalate the decision.
Do not enable remote administration, expose a router console to the public internet, open ports, disable the firewall, copy forum commands, or install an unknown remote-support tool as part of a routine router swap.
Do not paste or upload Wi‑Fi passwords, router administrator credentials, MFA codes, recovery codes, public IP addresses, MAC addresses, setup QR codes, camera IDs, network maps, or private screenshots into forms, texts, email, reports, or AI chats.
The customer signs in and enters secrets directly. Any approved ongoing access should use a named, least-privilege account that the customer can review and revoke.
Stop for damaged power gear, smoke, sparks, unusual heat, liquid, a swollen battery, fiber, a provider enclosure, electrical wiring, ceiling or attic access, ladders, wall work, or an unidentified building connection; use the responsible specialist.
Choose the right kind of help
