Windows 10 support has ended: upgrade, use ESU, or replace your PC?
Windows 10 still runs after standard support ends, but that does not mean it continues receiving the security updates you need. Check Windows 11 eligibility alongside the PC’s condition, essential software, and printers. Personal PCs and business-managed devices have different ESU and migration requirements, so establish which applies before paying for an upgrade or replacement.

Microsoft's standard support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can still turn on, but it no longer receives the normal Windows 10 security updates and technical support that came with the product.
Short answer
Run PC Health Check, then choose between a supported Windows 11 upgrade, temporary ESU coverage, replacement, or a tightly limited retirement plan. Compatibility, device health, apps, peripherals, backup quality, and business impact all matter.

PC Health Check answers the Windows 11 hardware question. It does not inspect every app, accessory, failing part, backup, or business dependency.
- Step 1:
Is the PC eligible for Windows 11?
Run Microsoft's PC Health Check. If it passes, confirm that the apps, printer, scanner, camera software, and other devices you rely on will also work before scheduling the upgrade.
Eligible and ready: plan the Windows 11 upgrade. Not eligible: do not bypass the hardware checks. Continue to step 2.
- Step 2:
Do you need a short transition period?
Microsoft's current consumer ESU page says an eligible personal Windows 10 PC can receive Extended Security Updates through October 12, 2027. ESU is a security-update bridge, not a feature upgrade, hardware repair, or long-term replacement for a supported system.
Need time to budget, replace software, or move files: check ESU eligibility. Ready to move on: continue to step 3.

Would replacement cost less than keeping this PC dependable?
Consider the computer's age, drive and battery health, memory, repair needs, performance, and the cost of replacing incompatible software or peripherals, not just the Windows 11 eligibility result.
Healthy and compatible: upgrade. Failing, very slow, or incompatible: replace and migrate only the data you choose.
- Step 4:
Does a legacy device or program require Windows 10?
A purpose-specific legacy computer may need to be retired from everyday use or isolated from email, browsing, and sensitive accounts while a replacement plan is developed. This is a limited operational workaround, not continued Windows support.
Document what depends on it, reduce exposure, preserve an authorized backup, and set a retirement date.

After PC Health Check
A compatible PC is not automatically ready.
Windows 11 requires a compatible processor, at least 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage, UEFI with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. Those minimums do not guarantee a pleasant or reliable result.
Hardware eligibility
Use PC Health Check rather than guessing from the computer's age or model name.
Drive and battery health
An eligibility pass does not prove that the storage, battery, cooling, or power system is dependable.
Free space and updates
Confirm adequate storage and review pending updates before planning a major version change.
Apps and licenses
List the programs you actually use and confirm their installers, subscriptions, and Windows 11 support.
Printers and special devices
Check drivers and vendor support for printers, scanners, cameras, label makers, and industry hardware.
Verified backup and recovery
Know where the backup is, confirm it can be opened, and keep account and recovery credentials under the owner's control.
Avoid risky shortcuts
What not to do
- Do not use registry edits, modified installers, or other bypasses to put Windows 11 on unsupported hardware.
- Do not disable Secure Boot, TPM, antivirus, or disk encryption simply to make an upgrade proceed.
- Do not factory-reset or erase the old computer until the owner verifies the required files and apps on the replacement.
- Do not assume a cloud-sync icon is a complete backup; open a sample of the files from the backup destination.
- Do not send passwords, MFA codes, BitLocker recovery keys, personal documents, or file contents in a booking form, chat, or diagnostic report.
Owner-controlled access
Your credentials and personal files stay private.
A readiness assessment can record device model, Windows version, compatibility result, storage health, and app or peripheral names. It should not collect passwords, browser data, personal documents, photos, email contents, MFA codes, or recovery keys.
Before any change
The owner approves the scope, controls account sign-ins, and confirms the backup. Destructive work, unsupported-install bypasses, and surprise resets are never automatic steps.
Plan home and business upgrades differently.
Business PC
Inventory line-of-business software, licensing, shared drives, printers, encryption, user roles, backup policy, downtime, and vendor support before choosing a rollout date.

No. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but standard technical assistance, feature updates, and security updates ended. A supported upgrade, eligible ESU path, or replacement plan reduces the risk of staying unprotected.
Should I force Windows 11 onto an unsupported computer?
Usually not. Unsupported installation can create update, driver, reliability, and support problems. Check eligibility and the whole workflow first, then compare a temporary supported bridge with replacement.
Can a business use the consumer Windows 10 ESU program?
